Why should I care about microplastics?

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles (and fibers) that can be present in food, water, and indoor dust. Research is evolving, but many people choose to reduce potential exposure using practical “high-leverage” changes—especially around heat + food contact, drinking habits, and home dust control.

What we can say confidently
  • Microplastics are widely detected in the environment and in many everyday contexts.
  • Exposure pathways plausibly include ingestion (food/water) and inhalation (indoor dust/fibers).
  • Some behavior changes are low-cost and low-regret (e.g., avoiding heating food in plastic).
What’s still uncertain
  • The exact dose-response relationship for many real-world exposures is still being studied.
  • Not all sources contribute equally for every person.
  • Studies vary in methods; we label confidence in the report.
